"I am a strong advocate of the importance of approaching learning as a process, not a product. In music especially, the process becomes the product. A process-oriented approach must be thorough, effective, thought-provoking, enlightening, expressive, and above all creative. Music is designed to be innately enjoyable. It is incumbent upon us as teachers of music to amplify that joy!" ~ Eugene Corporon
Hello!
My name is Ms. Zavala. I am so excited to teach the students of LaSalle Elementary! The 2018-2019 school year will be my second year at LSE.
I was raised in Weslaco, TX and graduated from Weslaco East High School. I continued my education in music at Texas State University in San Marcos, TX and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. While attending TXST, I was involved in many performing ensembles such as Women's Choir, University Singers, and Opera Workshop/Scenes. I was also apart of Mu Phi Epsilon, an international professional music fraternity. I graduated from Texas State University with my Bachelor's of Music in Music Performance and continued my education in Springfield, Missouri.
While attending Missouri State University I was involved in many performance ensembles such as University Singers, Women's Chorus, and Opera Scenes where I was given a wonderful leadership opportunity as a graduate assistant for the Opera studies program. I was also a quarter finalist in the Classical Singer Competition, 2015 Winner of the Concerto and Aria Competition at MSU, and placed second in the 2015 Area N.A.T.S. (National Association of Teaching Singers). I was also involved in the Springfield Regional Opera Young Artist Program from 2013-2015, and was the Springfield N.A.T.S. student Chapter Vice- President.
Upon the completion of my degree in Missouri, I moved here to Baton Rouge, and attended Louisiana State University for the completion of a teaching certification. I am currently in the process of beginning a new certification program that would require the completion of all three levels of the Texas State Kodály Certification Program.

What is Kodály?
A researched-based method of teaching music literacy.
Kodály put simply- is the education of the ear, mind, hands, and heart.
It is the language of the mind and the heart. This language develops musical literacy, sequential learning, conscience knowledge, represents many cultures, and uses folk and art music of intrinsic value. It makes an art of teaching. It builds learning, literacy, and life skills. It teaches creative and innovative thinking through music. It allows the child to become a musician capable of reading, writing, improvising, and performing music at a high level. It promotes individual confidence in expression and independence within the framework of group responsibility in a nurturing environment. It challenges the gifted and encourages the weak to risk participation and overcome fear of failure. It cultivates the next generation of leaders through a community of learners, creative thinkers, composers, and stewards of cultural heritage from one grade level to the next. It teaches students to see music when they hear it and makes music learning fun.
My goal is to influence, educate, and enrich children's lives positively through music. I aim to develop their musical ability by incorporating as much prior knowledge, independency as well as cooperation and team work, all while helping to instill a sincere love of music that will serve them the rest of their lives.

From Music Teacher to Performer
As a teacher with a performance background, I find the teaching of Kodaly, Orff, and Delcroze essential elements in music development. I can write all I want but seeing is believing!
